Sometimes the biggest part of a painted furniture makeover isn’t what you do to it … it’s what you have to un-do.
We found this little bench in our travels over the summer.
I liked the shape of it—and I really liked that somebody had already made some structural repairs. I thought this would be an easy project—just painting it and adding new fabric to the seat.
But first … we had to get rid of that old fabric.
That bottom layer pulled right off.
Next, Dave flipped the chair right-side-up and pried off the decorative nails and trim.
That wasn’t so hard … but that wasn’t the end of it either!
We found a layer of padding …
… more old fabric …
… more padding …
… even older fabric.
This was starting to seem like a never-ending project, but Dave kept peeling off layers and layers of old fabric and padding.
Finally, he got all the way down to …
… horsehair!!
Now that’s an old chair!
An old chair that has seen A LOT of re-do’s over the years.
Now it was (finally!) time for one more …
I painted the frame with a new color called Cotton from Dixie Belle Paint Company, the no-VOC chalk/mineral paint we sell at our store All Things New Again in Leesburg, Virginia.

Cotton is the brightest white in the Dixie Belle rainbow and one of five new colors released this month. It is the perfect shade of white for that crisp farmhouse look everyone loves … and the perfect shade to match my living room at home where I’m keeping this bench for me!
Dave built a new seat for the bench. We lucked out and had an old sofa pillow that fit the space perfectly. We used the pillow for the seat cushion instead of building it up with new padding.
Then we covered it with burlap for a rustic look … followed by elegant lace. I love the way these two very different textiles go together perfectly on this little bench.

I really like the new look!
But I’m sure—eventually—somebody else will come along and re-do it again. It might even be me!
