PAINTCATION
isn’t a contest.

Nobody is judging you.

(But we will randomly select daily prize winners!)

PAINTCATION is free to join and all furniture painting skill levels are welcome. If you paint furniture professionally or have never painted furniture before (but have been thinking about giving it a try), now is your chance! PAINTCATION is a personal challenge to start and finish a furniture painting project in 5 days—and have a little fun with us along the way.

Here’s how it works:

PAINTCATION 5-Day Furniture Painting Challenge

Make sure you are following All Things New Again’s Facebook page.

Starting on Monday, August 6, we will do a live video at 10 a.m. (eastern time) every morning focusing on a different aspect of painting furniture.

We will start with cleaning and prepping your furniture all the way to choosing the perfect finish for your piece.

You can ask questions in real time, share progress photos of your project and complete daily challenges for a chance to win prizes.

You can use any brand of paint you like. We will be using Dixie Bell Paint Company, the no VOC chalk/mineral paint we sell at our store All Things New Again in Leesburg, Virginia.

Here’s our Dixie Belle affiliate link if you want to try out their awesome products.

At the end of the week, everyone will have a beautiful piece of furniture that you painted!

All Things New Again | PAINTCATION 2018 | 5 Day Furniture Painting ChallengeParticipants will paint at their own pace and check in daily during our 10 a.m. (eastern time) Facebook live videos. The videos will remain up to watch on replay if you can’t make it live. No need to stress out about this! It’s just a fun idea to help everyone (including me!) start—and finish—a furniture painting project before summer ends.

You may choose any piece of furniture to paint that you like. It can be a piece from your home that you have been wanting to update, something from your stash of used furniture to paint and sell … or something you buy this week. It’s up to you! The only rule is you have to start your furniture painting project on Monday, August 6 and work on it throughout the week in order to be eligible for the prizes. No submitting pics of projects you already completed!

You have a week from today to find your furniture and gather your paint and supplies. Then join us Monday, August 6 at 10 a.m. eastern time over on the All Things New Again Facebook page for the PAINTCATION 2018 5-Day Furniture Painting Challenge!

A China Cabinet Paint Makeover (and A Little Decoupage Too!)

If you found this outdated china cabinet, would you buy it?

I did!

The 1970’s Fake Wood and avocado green backsplash might have scared away some people, but not me.

I knew at first glance this baby was the perfect candidate for a china cabinet paint makeover. (And a little decoupage too!)

Don’t believe me?

Look at this updated china cabinet now!

I decided right away that I would paint this china cabinet and decoupage the backsplash.

We are now selling decoupage papers at our store All Things New Again in Leesburg, Virginia (and here in our online store).

What I couldn’t decide was which beautiful pattern of decoupage paper to choose?

I narrowed it down to three … and asked my Furniture Painting Friday Friends which one they liked best. Furniture Painting Friday is our free weekly “mini” paint lesson. We do a live video over on our All Things New Again Facebook Page every Friday at 12 noon (eastern). This china cabinet paint makeover happened over several weeks and with a lot of help from our viewers who voted on different design decisions along the way.

I think they made great choices—starting with the decoupage paper!

Here are my

Tips for Decoupaging Paper Napkins Onto Furniture.

(If you use decoupage paper instead of napkins, you can skip Step #2.)

Before applying the decoupage paper, I painted over all of that avocado green with Dixie Belle Paint Company’s Blueberry just to freshen it up a bit. Blueberry is the same color I used on the shelves and interior walls before glazing with Unicorn SPiT.I usually create bold patterns with Unicorn SPiT (like this) but on the china cabinet paint makeover, I wanted a softer look. I practiced on a sample board first before painting, glazing and waxing the shelves.

Here’s the video tutorial showing how I created this look:

Finally, my china cabinet paint makeover needed a little paint! I used Dixie Belle Paint Company products, the chalk/mineral paint we sell at All Things New Again and use in our monthly Learn How to Paint Furniture class.

The nice thing about Dixie Belle is it S-T-I-C-K-S to all of that 1970’s Fake Wood with minimal prep work. You do have to give it extra cure time on slicker surfaces, but the wait is worth it. Bye-bye 1970’s Fake Wood!

I painted the details with Blueberry, the same color from the interior. After it dried, I painted over the entire outside with Cotton, one of Dixie Belle’s new colors. Then I distressed to reveal a little bit of blue here and there, sanding down to the bare wood in some places.

Here’s our referral link to Dixie Belle’s products if you want to check it out.

And here’s the china cabinet again!

I’m so glad I didn’t let a little avocado green and 1970’s Fake Wood scare me. I love how the china cabinet paint makeover turned out!

How To Paint a Perfect Beach Dresser

You may not be lucky enough to live at the beach, but you can bring a little bit of the beach into your bedroom with this fun and easy painted furniture DIY project. No need to clean any sand out of your car! This tutorial will show you how to paint the perfect beach dresser—no sunscreen required!

How to Paint a Beach Dresser | Painted Furniture Makeover | DIY | Dixie Belle PaintHere’s the “before” shot of the beach dresser. It had already been painted brown when I found it and it spent waaaaaay too much time in my garage waiting for its painted furniture makeover. You can create this look on any piece of furniture with enough space to separate into a “water” and a “sand” section. (You might even find the perfect project piece up at The Top of the Shop at our store All Things New Again in Leesburg, Virginia.)

We only recommend products we actually use and totally love.

I started with a quick base coat of one of Dixie Belle Paint Company’s turquoise colors called The Gulf. This is the same color I used on my sister’s Ikea kitchen table makeover. I didn’t sand or prime my sister’s laminate table. I didn’t sand or prime this high-gloss brown dresser either. Dixie Belle Paint sticks nicely to pretty much anything. Just make sure you clean the piece really well first.

For the second coat, I blended the The Gulf with two other Dixie Belle blues—Sea Glass and Pure Ocean—to create the “water” section of the beach dresser.

Dixie Belle Paint Company | chalk mineral paint | turquoise | aqua | blue | Sea Glass | The Gulf | Pure Ocean

It’s a soft, subtle look because the three blues I used are so close in color to each other, but there is just enough difference to give the piece a shimmery, water effect—like gentle waves on a lazy summer day.

Beach Dresser | Work in Progress

It isn’t a flawless finish—and I like it that way! The dresser had a lot of little imperfections due to its age and the previous paint job. I figured the beach isn’t perfect so the beach dresser shouldn’t be either.

Notice I didn’t  paint the bottom blue. I left space for the “sand” section.

Dixie Belle Paint Company | Dixie Belle Mud | raised stencil mediumI used a product called Dixie Belle Mud to create the sandy texture. Dixie Belle Mud comes in three colors—black, brown and white—and was created to use for those beautiful raised stencils everybody is putting on their furniture.

I always like to get double-duty out of my paint products. I used brown Dixie Belle Mud on the bottom section of the beach dresser. Instead of smoothing the Mud on with a putty knife like you would for a raised stencil, I pounced it on with a paintbrush to create lots of texture. When it dried, I painted over it with Dixie Belle’s sandy Burlap color. When the paint dried, I sanded gently to reveal the brown Mud underneath and soften the texture just a bit.

I pounced white paint with a stencil brush to create the foamy waves around the shoreline.

How to Paint the Perfect Beach Dresser | Painted Furniture Makeover | Create Sandy Texture with Paint | Dixie Belle MudI painted this beach dresser as part of our Furniture Painting Friday series over on our All Things New Again Facebook page. If you would like to see detailed video tutorials on these techniques (and more!) just head over to our Facebook page and search #beachdresser.

One of the nice things about painting a piece in front of a live audience every week is we can bounce ideas off of each other. I was originally planning on replacing those big brown knobs with crystal knobs, but somebody suggested shells instead. Then somebody else suggested starfish.

I found BOTH! (and some really cute little fishies too) over on Amazon. I bought a variety pack of 12 sea-themed knobs—and they are all super-cute. Here’s a link if you want to check them out.

Beach Dresser | Fish Drawer Pulls | Fish Drawer Knobs

I think the little sea creature knobs are the perfect finishing touch on this fun project! BONUS: I have four knobs leftover for another project down the road.

Here’s the Beach Dresser!

Sometimes the biggest part of a painted furniture makeover isn’t what you do to it … it’s what you have to un-do.

We found this little bench in our travels over the summer.

Painted Furniture Makeover | Before Shot | Vintage Bench | How to Re-Cover a Chair Seat

I liked the shape of it—and I really liked that somebody had already made some structural repairs. I thought this would be an easy project—just painting it and adding new fabric to the seat.

But first … we had to get rid of that old fabric.

That bottom layer pulled right off.

Next, Dave flipped the chair right-side-up and pried off the decorative nails and trim.

Painted Furniture Makeover | Vintage Bench | How to Re-Cover a Chair Seat

That wasn’t so hard … but that wasn’t the end of it either!

We found a layer of padding …

… more old fabric …

 … even older fabric.

This was starting to seem like a never-ending project, but Dave kept peeling off layers and layers of old fabric and padding.

Finally, he got all the way down to …

… horsehair!!

Now that’s an old chair!

An old chair that has seen  A LOT of re-do’s over the years.

Now it was (finally!) time for one more …

Cotton is the brightest white in the Dixie Belle rainbow and one of five new colors released this month. It is the perfect shade of white for that crisp farmhouse look everyone loves … and the perfect shade to match my living room at home where I’m keeping this bench for me!

Painted Furniture Makeover | Vintage Bench | How to Re-Cover a Chair Seat

Dave built a new seat for the bench. We lucked out and had an old sofa pillow that fit the space perfectly. We used the pillow for the seat cushion instead of building it up with new padding.

Then we covered it with burlap for a rustic look … followed by elegant lace. I love the way these two very different textiles go together perfectly on this little bench.Painted Furniture Makeover | Vintage Bench | How to Re-Cover a Chair Seat | Burlap and Lace Chair Seat | Rustic and Elegant Chair Makeover

I really like the new look!

But I’m sure—eventually—somebody else will come along and re-do it again. It might even be me!

5 Gorgeous New Dixie Belle Paint Colors — Who Wants To Win Free Paint?

Special thanks to Dixie Belle Paint Company for sponsoring this post and PAINT GIVEAWAY!

(All opinions are my own.)

Dixie Belle Paint Company | 5 New Colors

Graphic courtesy of Dixie Belle Paint Co.

We always say the hardest part of any furniture paint makeover is choosing a color.

Dixie Belle Paint Company just made it harder with five gorgeous new colors!

And we are so excited they are giving away FREE PAINT to five lucky winners. (See below for details on how to enter the giveaway.)

I knew one of the new colors would be perfect for this French Provincial-style dresser I had out in my garage.

But which one?

Furniture Paint Makeovers | Before Shot | French Provincial dresserI couldn’t decide so I did what I always do … I called my Mom about 16 times … and we changed our minds back and forth 16 times.

Then I asked our awesome All Things New Again Facebook Fans what color would they pick?

It was a toss-up between Pink Champagne and Mermaid Tail.

I decided on Pink Champagne.

But as I was cleaning the dresser with Dixie Belle’s White Lightning Cleaner, I noticed the drawers curved a lot like a … mermaid tail.

So I changed my mind again.

Here it is now!
Painted Furniture | French Provincial Dresser | Dixie Belle Paint | chalk mineral paint | Mermaid Tail | teal painted furniture I love it!

Dixie Belle Paint is the no-VOC chalk/mineral paint we sell at our store, All Things New Again in Leesburg, Virginia. We carry all 60 colors in the store + dozens of other awesome products to make your next paint project beautiful. We also offer a Learn How to Paint Furniture Class every month featuring Dixie Belle products. Our next class is Sunday, October 15. Click here for details.

If you can’t make it to Leesburg, no worries! For your shopping convenience, we now have an affiliate link directly to Dixie Belle’s full line of products. If you click on this link and make a purchase, we receive a commission at no additional cost to you. Dixie Belle ships everywhere.

Of course I love all of Dixie Belle’s colors! I also love how easy it is to use this paint, especially if you are just getting started painting furniture. Dixie Belle has wonderful coverage and self-levels to give you a professional-looking finish with a minimal amount of work. Just look at how nicely one coat covers–without any sanding or priming needed to make it stick.

(I did add a little of Dixie Belle’s BOSS stain-blocker over some discolored areas behind the hardware and over those flower designs on the top drawers–just to be safe that they wouldn’t bleed through.)

This is a solid-wood dresser, but like a lot of furniture from this era, the top is laminate. Dixie Belle sticks to it! Really.

There’s one little trick to painting laminate …. give the paint E–X–T–R–A time to dry before proceeding with each step.

I talk more in-depth about drying time and curing time in my article 3 Big Mistakes New Furniture Painters Make.

On this dresser, I let the top dry for a few days. Then I like to run over everything quickly with very fine grit sandpaper to burnish the paint a bit and make it feel velvety smooth.

The second coat of paint provided full coverage. Again, I let it dry a few extra days before sealing with Dixie Belle’s Gator Hide, super-tough polyacrylic.Painted Furniture | Dixie Belle Paint | chalk mineral paint | Mermaid Tail | teal painted furniture

For the hardware, I dry-brushed a little bit of Mermaid Tail and then rubbed a little off with my finger in spots where I wanted more gold shining through.

Here’s the finished dresser again! It is available for sale at our store All Things New Again in Leesburg, VA.

Don’t worry, Pink Champagne fans! I have another piece out in my garage that will look perfect painted pink. I’ll bring you that project soon … but first, come back next week to see my mom’s project that she is working on with the new color Cotton, a bright and beautiful white.
