Three little kittens who lost their mittens.

Three little pigs with housing problems.

Three little bears with a blonde girl in their beds.

I read a lot of stories to my 2-year-old. It seems cute little guys with issues tend to come in threes.

Kind of like these three little vintage chairs I picked up a few weeks ago.

These little guys were cute … but they did have some issues.

Once upon a time I’m sure there were four cute little chairs. What happened to the fourth one? Who knows?

Maybe a big bad wolf huffed and puffed and blew it away.

When I find three matching chairs like this, I usually like to pair two of them with a table and paint the leftover chair to match a desk. This trio didn’t seem sturdy enough for sitting, but they were shaped so nicely I couldn’t pass them up.

I decided to transform them into Happy Garden Chairs.

I started this project by base coating each chair in a different color: purple, red and yellow.

I chose three more fun colors to brush on top of each chair leaving lots of the base coat colors shining through.

Turquoise over the purple chair …

Pink over the red chair …

Spring green over the yellow chair …

Then came the really fun part—painting a peace sign, heart and sunshine on the seat of each chair. I painted these during the last snowstorm we had. This was the only sunshine in my house that day, but it was enough to make me smile.

Peace, love and sunshine! I hope these Happy Garden Chairs make you smile too.

I finished the chairs by rubbing my designs with a damp sponge to blend the artwork into the chair and reveal some more of the base coat color through them. By wet distressing these simple designs like this, it gave them a little more depth so they looked more stylized (and less like a second grader drew them!)

Now these three little chairs are ready to place out in the garden where they can live happily ever after.

Peace, love and sunshine to all of you!

  1. Thanks for visiting me Courtney 🙂 The chairs are awesome–LOVE the colors. They definitely put you in a spring frame of mind–and we know what spring means!! Time for garage sales 🙂

  2. I love the colors and names of them, that you chose! What a great effect to brush another color over top. I am so wanting to get into the whole upcycling painting thing but I am too scared. This looks easy!

    1. Hi AnnMarie,
Don’t be scared! It is easy! You can do it–just give it a try! And the nice thing about paint is if you don’t like it, you can paint over it and try again. If you are anywhere near the Leesburg VA area we offer classes on how to create different looks by layering colors like this. We have a lot of fun, but the best advice I tell people is to just give it a try! And I’m always around and happy to answer any questions you may have once you get started. 🙂 –Courtney
